5 Purrrfect Reasons to Adopt a Cat!

Updated: Sep 24, 2020

Did you know that June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month? It was created by the ASPCA in an effort to raise awareness for the millions of cats sitting in shelters every year. This week not only kicks off Adopt a Shelter Cat Month but is also the start of kitten season, where there is a large increase of kitten births and kittens take over rescues and shelters. About 3.2 million cats enter the shelter each year with about 860,000 euthanized annually for one reason or another (usually due to overpopulation). Adopting a cat has so many benefits for both you and them! Check out some of those reasons:

1. It makes sense financially. A usually low adoption fee comes with the cat already neutered/spayed, a microchip, and all vaccines. Plus, cats are usually cheaper to take care of in the long run.

2. They are perfect for apartments. If you're worried about having a dog in an apartment, then a cat is also a great choice! They don't need a ton of space and usually happy just chilling in that Amazon box in the corner.

3. You're saving a life. With about 860,000 cats euthanized in shelters each year, by just adopting one, you are saving their life and the life of the cat who the shelter can then take in after.

4. They have unique personalities. You really never know what kind of cat you're adopting until you bring them home and they come out of their shells. They are often stressed and scared at the shelter but become this blooming light of personality and love once they settle into your home!

5. Cats make us healthier. Studies have shown that having a cat reduces blood pressure and stress while decreasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
